Orthogonal Diagnostics Inc., founded in 2012 by Dr. David Charlton, the inventor of lateral flow technology, has established itself as a pioneer in the development of saliva-based diagnostics. The oversight and leadership members comprise over 90 years of diagnostic development experience and have been inventors on multiple patents—most notably the Charlton Patent—and several patents for obi.

Team bios

  • CEO/Founder

    Andrew began his career developing diagnostic assays at Alere Inc. (now Abbott), where he contributed to the advancement of lateral flow immunoassays and played a key role in transferring assays to production, while adhering to FDA regulations and GLP/GMP standards. He later became a founding member of Orthogonal Diagnostics Inc., where his leadership has been instrumental in helping raise over $14M for multiple startups and driving innovation in novel diagnostics. He has successfully managed contract projects with Abbott, Quest Diagnostics, and several startups. As the CEO of Orthogonal and inventor of the obi saliva platform, Andrew brings extensive experience in cross-functional team management and the development of visual and reader-based lateral flow diagnostics. His leadership and technical innovation have been critical in shaping Orthogonal's success and expanding its patent portfolio.

  • VP of Operations

    Bob studied microbiology at San Diego State University, earned a degree in technical manufacturing, and is a certified project manager. He worked in the endocrinology laboratory at the Salk Institute, developing assays critical for identifying novel growth factors. Bob co-founded Medlyte Diagnostics, which focused on detecting novel markers related to cardiac ischemia. He has worked at leading medical diagnostics companies, including Hybritech, Quidel, Alere Inc., and Abbott, where he contributed to diagnostics development, led research and development teams, and managed manufacturing departments. Bob is an inventor on numerous patents for diagnostic systems and therapeutics.

  • CSO/Founder

    David received his Ph.D. in Immunology from the University of Toronto. He began his career as a virologist at Wellesley Hospital in Toronto, where he developed assays and assay formats for infectious diseases, fertility, drugs of abuse, and other medical conditions. He has held senior leadership roles at multinational companies, including Ortho Diagnostics, Advanced Care Products of Ortho Pharmaceuticals, Carter Wallace, Adeza Biomedical, and Alere Inc. David co-founded Advantage Diagnostics Inc., which was acquired by Alere in 2004. He holds numerous patents for diagnostic devices and systems, including the Charlton Patent for lateral flow devices, which is widely used in point-of-care diagnostics. Many refer to David as the "godfather" of lateral flow technology.

  • CFO/Founder

    Janis is a graduate of the Toronto Institute of Medical Technology and holds an ART (Advanced Registered Medical Technologist) in Immunology. She began her career in the pharmaceutical and in-vitro diagnostics (IVD) industries at Ortho Pharmaceuticals Research and Ortho Diagnostics, J&J subsidiaries in Toronto, Canada. Janis has since consulted for several IVD companies on quality systems, regulatory strategy, and government submissions. She co-founded and served as president of Advantage Diagnostics Inc., where she established and implemented systems, and directed operations for finance, sales, marketing, regulatory affairs, legal affairs, quality assurance, and manufacturing. She also negotiated technology transfers, business development agreements, and company acquisition.

  • Marketing/Operations Manager

    Jeanette is an accomplished project manager with extensive experience in diagnostics, creative services, and marketing. Currently, at Orthogonal Diagnostics, she leads cross-functional teams in executing diagnostic product projects, managing all phases from conception to delivery, and overseeing marketing strategies. Her prior roles at Thermo Fisher Scientific and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners involved project coordination for high-profile clients, ensuring seamless execution of campaigns and creative services.

  • Sr. Product Designer

    Jon is an experienced industrial designer in the health and wellness sector, specializing in diagnostics and consumer electronics. Throughout his career, Jon has successfully led the design of multiple diagnostic devices and readers, overseeing the process from ideation to injection molding. His contributions to the industry are reflected in his inclusion on four patents, highlighting his innovative approach to product development.

  • Production/QC Manager

    Kathleen is a dedicated Production and Quality Assurance (QA) Manager at Orthogonal Diagnostics Inc., where she has spent the last seven years contributing to the company's success. With extensive experience in regulatory and quality compliance, Kathleen plays a key role in ensuring that Orthogonal’s diagnostic products meet stringent industry standards. Her expertise spans across various aspects of diagnostic development, including navigating regulatory requirements and implementing quality assurance processes to maintain high levels of product integrity and safety. Kathleen’s comprehensive understanding of the regulatory landscape has been instrumental in helping Orthogonal develop innovative, compliant products.
